Indonesia will face Gilas Pilipinas without fear

MANILA (SEABA Championship 2017) - The last time Indonesia won the SEABA Championship was more than 2 decades ago in 1996. They are hungry, and they will go all out to win it again.

Indonesia are going into their game against hosts and defending champions Philippines with an unbeaten record. They beat Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam and are coming off a 73-point shellacking of Myanmar yesterday. They are brimming with confidence as the tournament's best three-point shooting team, and they have two fresh guys who just got cleared to play two days ago.

"It's good for us to have Arki and Jamarr as we face the Philippines," coach Wahyu Widayat Jati. "I hope they can give us more energy in the game."

Even with 2017 IBL MVP Arki Wisnu and naturalized player Jamarr Johnson in tow, however, Indonesia remain significant underdogs, but this doesn't faze them one bit. Instead, they're entering their final game without any tinge of intimidation.

"First thing for us is not having fear and just playing regardless of their reputation," Johnson said. "We just got to go in there and play our brand of basketball."

"To be honest, it will be hard to beat the philippines," added Wsinu. "But at least we won't give up. We will try our best."

They also know that the stadium will be packed and the crowd will not be friendly to them, but this is something coach Jati is used to already as the arenas in the IBL are regularly filled as well.

"We have big crowds also in Indonesia, so for me it's the same," he said.

Johnson should be a key player for Indonesia in this game. He was named Rookie of the Year and MVP of the IBL in 2016, and he gives the team a unique blend of size, athleticism and a versatile skill-set. For him, though, it is all about sacrificing for the big W.

"We will play our hearts out do," Johnson declared. "We will do what we need to win - sacrifice my body for scoring, rebounding, just do whatever we have to do to win."

This is the first time Johnson will face a team of Gilas Pilipinas's caliber as a member of Indonesia, but he remains unruffled in the face of the home team's superior size and depth.
