Injured David Andersen returns home to Australia

BEIRUT (FIBA Asia Cup 2017) - Australia big man David Andersen has been ruled out for the remainder of the FIBA Asia Cup with a shoulder injury.

The four-time Olympian got hurt shortly before the start of the tournament and did not play in the Boomers' blowout triumphs in the Group Phase over Japan or Hong Kong.

Basketball Australia said in a news release on their website basketball.net.au:

"David sustained a shoulder injury against Syria on August 6 in a lead-up game to the FIBA Asia Cup. An MRI was performed in Lebanon to confirm the diagnosis and best management of the injury.

"Following the results of the imaging, the Basketball Australia medical team and coaching staff are in agreement that it is in David's best interest to return to Australia. The actions taken are precautionary but respectful of his NBL club and the pending NBL season."

Andersen, 37, was a vital part of the Boomers' campaign in Rio de Janeiro last summer when they went on a strong run to the Semi-Finals, averaging 8.8 points and 4.8 rebounds.

He had 15 points, 5 rebounds and 3 assists against Spain in the Bronze Medal Game but Australia suffered an 89-88 defeat.
