Davis upbeat about Chinese Taipei's chances at Asia Cup

TAIPEI (FIBA Asia Cup 2017) - A month ago, Chinese Taipei recorded a milestone - bagging the title at the EABA Championship 2017 - and one of the big reasons for that was the presence of Quincy Davis.

Davis - the 2.03m naturalized center for Chinese Taipei - proved to be a difference-maker at the EABA tournament held in Nagano, Japan. Davis averaged an impressive 18.5 points, 10.5 rebounds and 1.0 block per game for the Taipei quintet while also shooting nearly 58% from the field. His 29-point, 17-rebound explosion in the Semi-Final derailed hosts Japan, while his 21-point, 13-rebound, line in the Final against Korea helped give Chinese Taipei their first championship finish in FIBA Asia history.

It was a special triumph for a team that lost their opening game of the competition to bitter rivals China, 96-63. Davis played well in that encounter, putting up 15 points, 9 boards and 3 blocks, but it was not nearly enough to upend Team Dragon. It was a good thing, then, that he stepped up when the team needed him the most.

"I feel great about the way the Taipei national team has played for the start of this year in the EABA!" Davis said as he remembered their historic win. "We took a hard hit the first game against China, but we didn't give up!"

That resilient attitude is something Davis knows Taipei will need in their remaining tournaments this year, including the William Jones Cup 2017 at home, the FIBA Asia Cup 2017 in Beirut and the first round of Asia Qualifiers for the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2019. To increase the team's chances of notching Ws, Davis concedes that they will need more firepower, though he doesn't concern himself much with worrying about how good the other teams are billed to be.

"I don't really focus on which teams we play against in each tournament," Davis said. "Our main focus is US to work together to understand one another's tendencies, but we will add a few players for the next tournament to give us more strength."

"I believe with the success of the last tournament and with added players we will do well this year!"Quincy DavisQuincy Davis

Marquee up-and-comers like Liu Cheng, Chou Yi-Hsiang and Chou Po-Chen are expected to be named to the national team in the next few weeks while many fans believe household names like Tien Lei, Lu Cheng-Ju and Tseng Wen-Ting will also make the cut. As good as these guys are, however, the main responsibility of carrying much of the team's fortunes lies on the broad shoulders of Davis.
