LA Tenorio shatters PBA Iron Man streak while Lu Cheng-Ju, Tanaka reach scoring milestones

ASIA - Earlier this month, Yi Jianlian set a historic milestone on the Chinese Basketball Association by being the first and only player to so far to record at least 10,000 points and 5,000 rebounds. That is certainly an accomplishment worth celebrating, but it’s by far from the only one that happened around the league’s in Asia this past week.

Information and stats updated as of March 17, 2019.

In his sixth season with Alvark Tokyo, Daiki Tanaka surpassed the 3,000-point threshold over his entire professional career in Alvark’s 86-78 win over Toyama Grouses on March 2.

Tanaka has been a full-time starter for Alvark Tokyo ever since his second season with the team and has been a double-digit scoring threat ever since. With his precise footwork and sharp-shooting, the national team guard has been key to Alvark’s success. His performance notched him a B.League Finals MVP and a FIBA Asia Champions Cup MVP award successively in 2018. The 27-year-old averaged 15.4 points, 2.6 rebounds, and 4.0 assists per game while shooting a red-hot 52.9% from downtown at the FIBA Asia Champions Cup for the Alvark Tokyo that finished in second place.

Another scoring milestone was shattered in the Chinese-Taipei Super Basketball League (SBL) on March 9. Lu Cheng-Ju had earlier become the SBL’s all-time leading scorer in January but he doubled down in this game to become the first player to reach 5,000 career points.

It was only fitting that the 33-year-old sharpshooter reached his milestone on a three-pointer early in the third quarter, as long range shots has been his specialty throughout his career.

Lu is coming off an MVP season averaging 16.6 points per game which lead all locals. This season, he’s dropped down to 13.6 points which is still good for 3rd among locals this season.

Over in the Philippines, LA Tenorio of Barangay Ginebra San Miguel breaks a remarkable feat. His recent game in the Philippines Basketball Association (PBA) against the Magnolia Hotshos was also the 597th consecutive game played for the floor general, breaking an all-time record.

The milestone was previously set by Alvin Patrimonio and has been held for over a decade. Tenorio broke the record on March 17 while facing Patrimonio’s former team, Magnolia Hotshots.

Dubbed the “Iron Man” by Filipino fans, Tenorio could continue the streak far beyond it’s current point as he still has yet to show signs of slowing down at 34 years of age. Tenorio joined the PBA way back in 2016 as a highly-touted prospect and is still productive with averages of 11.3 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 5.8 assists per contest in 8 games this season.
