Final fight in flight: Eagles and Blue Birds extend rivalry with Bahrain league title on the line

MANAMA (Bahrain) - The Finals of the Zain Bahrain Basketball League has come down to a battle between two of the best clubs in the country. More than being the clash to determine the seasonal champion, this matchup is also an extension of a fierce rivalry between the two historic teams; Al Ahli and Al Manama.

In a battle of the best-of-three Finals series, one team will not only emerge as league champions, but will also own bragging rights over their rivals for at least another season.

Al Ahli, nicknamed “The Eagles”, were first established in 1936 and its popularity spread throughout the country through the influence of intellects, writers, historians, as well as merchants during that period. They later evolved into a cultural, social, and sports club as time passed and are one of the educational institutions that has continuously contributed to the society in Bahrain.

Al Manama were established later in 1946, but have since built up their recognition across the local and Arabic region as one of the most popular sports clubs in Bahrain. The team, based in Manama, is nicknamed as the Blue Birds.

The Blue Birds have played an important role in changing Bahrain’s perspective on sports by competing and excelling with both local and foreign talents on their teams to form a formidable squad.

The two clubs have taken their turns to spread their wings and fly to become the top team in the league over the past decade. The Blue Birds recently completed a three-peat from 2016 to 2018, while the Eagles are looking for their first league title since. 2010.
