Iran upend Lebanon for first time, to face undefeated China in Quarters

TEHRAN (2016 FIBA Asia U18 Championship) - The knockout stage of the 2016 FIBA Asia U18 Championship is set as China are the only team to get past the Group Phase undefeated after hosts Iran handed Lebanon their first loss of the tournament.

The Iranians' reward will be a Quarter-Final showdown against the three-time reigning champions China as Iran's 76-54 victory over Lebanon could not catapult them from fourth place in Group B. The hosts got 13 points each from Ehsan Samadi and Amirhossein Khandanpoor and finished 3-2 in the group. Lebanon, who got 14 points from Mark Alkhoury, still locked up first place in Group B with a 4-1 record. The Lebanese will face India in the Quarter-Finals.

Korea also improved to 4-1 and secured second place as Kim Jinyoung's 18 points paced four players in double figures in a 107-56 win over winless Indonesia, who got 12 points from Muhamad Noor Arighi and Bagas Darmawan Hartono. Indonesia will head home now while Korea tackle Philippines for a spot in the Semi-Finals.

Japan finished in third place in the group with 3-2 record after a convincing 98-78 victory over Kazakhstan. Tensho Sugimoto nailed 5 three-pointers in pouring in 43 points to go with 7 rebounds and 5 steals for Japan while Yudai Nishida hit 4 three-pointers in scoring 27 points while adding 5 steals. The Japanese move onto a Quarter-Final showdown against Chinese Taipei. Kazakhstan, who finished fifth in the group with a 1-4 record, got double-doubles from both Artem Parfenov (23 points and 10 rebounds) and Nikita Timofeyev (21 and 15) but depart the tournament.

Group A top honours went to China, who moved to 5-0 with dominant 98-51 victory over Thailand. The Chinese got a balanced effort as seven players scored in double figures paced by Du Runwang's 18 points. Thailand got 19 points and 11 rebounds from Justin Bassey but dropped to 1-4 and were left on the outside of the knockout stage looking in and now head home.

Japan's Quarter-Final opponent Chinese Taipei locked up the second spot in Group A with a 99-61 thrashing of Iraq as Tseng Hsiang-Chen and Chen Yu-Wei both had 13 points to lead six players in double figures. Chinese Taipei finished the Group Stage with a 4-1 record while Iraq were 1-4 and took fifth place despite Ihab Al-Zuhairi collecting 21 points, 18 rebounds and 3 assists.

The final game of the group stage decided the placement of the final two quarter-finalists from Group A and Philippines grabbed the win 105-82 over India to take third place. Jolo Mendoza scored 23 points for the Philippines, who will take on Korea in the final eight. India dropped to fourth in the group with a 2-3 record despite Daniel Arthur Wilson hitting 16 points. India advanced to the Quarter-Finals for the first time in 12 years and will face Lebanon.
