Gilas youth set to face Australia in Quarter-Finals following win over Kazakhstan

DOHA (Qatar) - The Philippines book a trip to Quarter-Finals with a spirited win against Kazakhstan, 83-60.

Gilas Youth had a strong start in this game, shooting over 60 percent in the first half to build up a lead that would last until the final buzzer. The game was fast-paced which was in favor for the Philippines as they 17 points in transition compared to Kazakhstan’s 8.

The Philippines also dominated the boards with 64 rebounds to 37, which was also a result of Kazakhstan struggling from the floor as they shot 27.2 percent from the field.

Both teams had a hard time holding onto the ball, as the Philipppines had 30 turnovers while Kazakhstan had 21. Ultimately, it was the Philippines ability to convert their shot attempts, at 42.3 percent from the field, that lifted them to the victory.

The Philippines had 5 players score in double digits, led by Lorenzo Competente, who had 15 points in the game. Another player who impressed for the Philippines was Jaycob Bayla who had 13 points, 9 rebounds, and 6 steals.

For Kazakhstan, their main firepower came from Daniil Severgin who led all scorers with 24 points to go with 9 rebounds, 3 assists, and 7 steals.

The Philippines now advance to the Quarter-Finals to face Australia who won all 3 games in the Group Phase with a sizable margin. The two teams had previously played against each other in the Group Phase of the 2018 edition of the competition where the Crocs went undefeated as champions.
