Dominican Republic locked and loaded for AmeriCup Qualifiers

SANTO DOMINGO (Dominican Republic) - Seven members of the Dominican Republic's squad at last year's FIBA Basketball World Cup have been included on the 24-man list for the upcoming FIBA AmeriCup 2022 Qualifying games against the US Virgin Islands and Cuba.

The Dominicans were soundly beaten by Canada in Oshawa in their opening AmeriCup qualifier on February 21, 89-72, but rebounded with an 88-84 triumph in a rematch played three days later in Santo Domingo.

Victor Liz and Eloy Vargas, who represented the country at the past two World Cups and excelled in the opening window, are among the headline names on the list just announced.

The Dominican Republic will host games in this window at Punta Cana, with FIBA having instituted a “bubble” format as it allows for a more controlled and secured environment to compete during the coronavirus pandemic.

Canada will also face Cuba (Nov. 29) and the US Virgin Islands (Nov. 30) at Punta Cana.

Other members of the Dominican squad that advanced from the First Round at the World Cup in the squad for this window are Rigoberto Mendoza, Sadiel Rojas, Juan Miguel Suero, Gelivis Solano and Luis Montero.

Solano had 11 points and six assists in the 88-84 triumph over Canada in February

In addition to Vargas, big man Angel Delgado is back after playing in the first window and the Dominican squad also has the exciting talent of Andres Feliz, a 23-year-old guard from Guachupita. Feliz played to rave reviews the last two years of American college basketball at Illinois. He averaged 11 points, 5 rebounds and 2.9 assists for the Fighting Illini last season.

The top three teams from each of the four groups will qualify for the AmeriCup. All four sides in Group C have 1-1 records.
