USA close group play strong after rolling over Venezuela

RECIFE (Brazil) - After starting 0-1 in Group C at the FIBA AmeriCup 2022, USA reeled off two consecutive big wins to get their tournament back on track, with the latest win coming against Venezuela, 101-49, to close out group play.

This game was a resumption of the game that originally started on Sunday September 4 but was postponed due to a leak in the arena. The game resumed today at the start of the second half with USA leading 48-21.

USA picked right up where they left off, outscoring Venezuela 53-28 in the final two quarters, knocking down six three-pointers to seal the runaway victory.

It was a very balanced attack from USA, as four players scored in double figures. All 12 players played at least 10 minutes and all but one of them got into the scoring column. Craig Sword led the way with a game-high 19 points along with 2 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals on 7-of-8 shooting from the field.

Anthony Lamb finished with 15 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists on 4-of-10 shooting from three-point, while Norris Cole (12 points, 5 rebounds, 6 assists, 2-of-5 3P) and Frank Mason (12 points, 4 assists, 2-of-2 3P) both chipped in 12 points and two threes. These four players combined to make 10 of the team's 14 total shots from beyond the arc.

USA dominated Venezuela in all phases of the game. They knocked down 11 more threes, scored 24 points off turnovers compared to only four, dished out 31 assists compared to 10 and got 51 points from their bench, which was two more than Venezuela's point total for the entire game.

With group play now done for USA and Venezuela, they both finished tied at 2-1 along with Mexico in Group C but based on the tiebreaker between the three teams, USA finishes on top of the group followed by Mexico and Venezuela.
