ST THOMAS (FIBA AmeriCup 2017) – The National Federation of the Virgin Islands confirmed the 12-player roster Sam Mitchell will coach during the FIBA AmeriCup 2017.

Virgin Islands will rely heavily on six of the players that represented the country in the Centrobasket 2016, with Walter Hodge leading the way as he did on Panama, where he averaged 14 points and 5.6 rebounds. Aska and Hart will also be instrumental for the Virgin Islands, as they were in the 2016 regional championship, when both players averaged over 10 points. Coach Sam Mitchell will rely heavily on the experience of his players as the team battles heavily favored Group B opponents.

Group B of the FIBA AmeriCup 2017 will be played in Bahia Blanca, Argentina, with the participation of the Virgin Islands, Venezuela, Canada and the host Argentina. The Caribbean’s team participation in the continental championship will begin on August 27 against Canada. Sam Mitchell and company will then face Venezuela and Argentina to complete the Group Phase.

Virgin Islands will need a top-team finish in the group to advance along with Argentina, as main organizer of the competition, to the Semi-Finals of the FIBA AmeriCup 2017 in Cordoba, Argentina on September 2. The Final of the FIBA AmeriCup 2017 will be played on September 3.
