USA start training camp for AmeriCup on August 17

COLORADO SPRINGS (FIBA AmeriCup 2017) - The United States will hold their training camp for the FIBA AmeriCup August 17-24 at the University of Houston, USA Basketball have announced.

The Americans, who will be coached by Jeff Van Gundy, will then travel to Montevideo and have more workouts before taking on Panama, hosts Uruguay and the Dominican Republic in Group C.

The last time the USA took part in the competition that was formerly known as the FIBA Americas Championship was in 2007 when they hosted the event in Las Vegas, Nevada. That team won the tournament and qualified for the 2008 Olympics.

As for the make-up of the squad, USA Basketball said in a news release: "Players selected to participate in the USA AmeriCup Team training camp are expected to primarily be from the NBA G League and will be announced at a later date."

The United States senior men's team has not lost in international competition since a 101-95 defeat to Greece in the Semi-Finals of the 2006 FIBA Basketball World Cup.

Since that time, the Americans have won the 2007 FIBA Basketball Americas Championship, the 2008, 2012 and 2016 Olympics and the 2010 and 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cups.

The USA will later this year take part in the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2019 Americas Qualifiers and take on Mexico, Puerto Rico and Cuba in Group C. Their first World Cup Qualifiers will be at Puerto Rico on November 23 and at home to Mexico on November 26. To put themselves into position to compete at the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo, the USA will have to first reach the World Cup.
