MEXICO CITY (FIBA U18 Americas Women's Championship 2018) – The FIBA U18 Americas Women’s Championship 2018 had its first upset, after Colombia defeated the host of the continental competition 88-78 to close-out the second day of competition.
"Really happy and proud to represent my country once again. Mexico is a great rival, but we maintained our concentration at all time and that is why we captured the victory. That was the key, it was our concentration, and we were consistent in the good things we did. When things did not go well, we adjusted quickly," said Mayra Caicedo author of 30 points against Mexico.
Unquestionably, Colombia is living a great moment in women's basketball. In 2016, the Colombians took the Bronze Medal in the South American Women's Championship. In 2017, Colombia achieved a historic qualification to the FIBA U17 Women’s Basketball World Cup.
In a historic 2018, the Colombians won Gold Medals at the ODESUR Games and at the Central American and Caribbean Games in Barranquilla 2018, Caicedo was part of those two conquests.
"These last tournaments have shown that in Colombia there is talent and we have to continue taking advantage of it. We keep improving day by day. We battle every day to improve Colombian basketball in all the competitions," added Caicedo.
At this stage of the FIBA U18 Americas Women’s Championship, Colombia occupies the second position of Group B and to close the Group Phase the team will face El Salvador.
