Canada and USA will play for FIBA Americas U18 title

VALDIVIA (2016 FIBA Americas U18 Championship) – The final game of the 2016 FIBA Americas U18 Championship will be between Canada and USA for the continental gold. It will be a rematch of the 2014 edition finale. Puerto Rico and Brazil will play for Bronze.

Canada defeated Puerto Rico 83-66 in a dominating performance that was jumpstarted by a 15-2 opening run by the North American team. Puerto Rico could not compete against a Canadian team that was led by a sharp Lindell Wigginton, who scored 22 points, with 4 rebounds and 5 assists in the win. Jhivan Jackson led the Caribbean team with 15 points in an erratic performance that also included 9 turnovers for the point guard and 23 for his team.

USA won in convincing fashion 88-48 over Brazil to remain undefeated in the 2016 edition. The South Americans were able to compete and stay in the game with good defensive balance and physicality on the inside but a 33-12 third quarter was enough to confirm USA’s victory and advance the team to the gold medal game of the competition. The combination of Markelle Fultz with 10 points and 11 assists and Michael Porter Jr with 17 points led the way for the dominating semifinal win for the North Americans.

In the Reclassification games for 5th to 8th place of the competition, Argentina defeated Virgin Islands 91-79 with an excellent 50.7%-from-the-floor shooting performance from the South American team. Facundo Corvalan led Argentina for the second game in a row with 18 points, 6 rebounds and 8 assists in the win.

Chile also won their Reclassification game against a tough Dominican Republic squad that for the second consecutive day fell in a close, thriller, of a match-up that was determined in the last possesions. The home team was led by an excellent performance from its guards in Nicolas Aguirre and Ignacio Arroyo, who combined for 42 points in the win. Arroyo also added 10 rebounds and the game-winning shot to the list. For Dominicana, Lionel Figueroa was brilliant with 25 points and 15 rebounds in a losing effort.

Tomorrow, the day opens with the game for the 7th place of the competition between Virgin Islands and Dominican Republic, followed by the 5th place game between Chile and Argentina, the Bronze medal game between Puerto Rico and Brazil and capped off by the Gold medal match-up between Canada and USA.
