Mingas returns as Angola announce preliminary squad for FIBA AfroBasket 2017 Qualifier

LUANDA (FIBA AfroBasket 2017) - Almost two years after his retirement from the Angolan national team, Eduardo Mingas is back for the FIBA AfroBasket 2017 Zone 6 qualifiers, the Angolan Basketball Federation announced on Saturday.

The 38-year-old power forward had called his career a day in the aftermath of Angola's defeat to Nigeria at FIBA AfroBasket 2015 Final.

Now, he has been added to the 15-man preliminary squad.

While Carlos Dinis, who was appointed head coach of the former African champions almost two weeks ago, has resigned due to personal reasons, his assistant Manuel Gi will lead the team during the regional qualifiers in Lusaka.

The Zambian capital of Lusaka will host FIBA Africa Zone 6 Group G, which consists of Angola, South Africa and hosts Zambia. The three teams will be competing for the only ticket on offer for this year's FIBA AfroBasket in Congo-Brazzaville in August (19-30). The tournament will run from March 25-30.

Meanwhile, the winner of FIBA Africa Zone 6 Group H qualifier - Mozambique and Zimbabwe - will also advance to the Final Round.

However, the teams that finish second in Zone 6 groups G and H will have a second chance to advance to the FIBA AfroBasket 2017 Final Round by facing each other.
