Ferroviario de Maputo, InterClube destroy field to remain unbeaten

CAIRO (Egypt) - Green and blue are the reigning colors on day three of the FIBA Africa Women's Champions Cup 2019 at the Cairo Indoor Stadium. Experience cannot be bought. It is simply earned over the years.

Defending champions Ferroviario de Maputo saw off CNSS from Democratic republic of Congo to improve their win ratio to 2-0 and they achieved this with such intensity and precision.

Five-time champions InterClube clinched their second win at the continental tournament

CNSS vs Ferroviario de Maputo

Gimo was immense for Ferroviario today

For the defending champions Ferroviario de Maputo, Sunday was a great day. All 12 players got playing time and got the job done. As usual, they approached the game with intensity from the onset and led 19-9 at the end of the first quality.

Turning Point: Ferroviario de Maputo won the second quarter by 13 points before winning the third by a whole 16 points. Head coach Carlos Aik then decided to introduce his fringe players and CNSS had a party. They outscored Ferroviario 21-14 in the last quarter but it was too late.

Stats Don't Lie: CNSS made 26 turnovers  while Ferroviario made 30 points from fast breaks in a game the latter won by 32 points. What if CNSS had stopped those fast breaks? That is a question that cannot be answered now but it will give them sleepless nights.

Game Hero: Deolinda Gimo was exceptional for the Mozambican giants. That looked like a rebirth right there. She sunk 19 points and picked nine rebounds to inspire her team to a much-needed victory.

Quote: "I needed to step up today. I am very happy with today's performance. Two wins in two games is very good for us," Gimo, Ferroviario center.

"This game was very tough for us. We struggled to break them down. We did our best but they were so strong," Evodie Londa, CNSS captain.

Bottom Line: Ferroviario de Maputo are playing with the conviction of a champion right from the way they make small decisions to big decisions like player selection and the sisterhood connection in the team helps.

InterClube vs MFM Queens

Lucas dropped a game -high 15 points

A completely one-sided game that saw the five-time African champions InterClube control the game right from tip off. Playing at this level for the first time, the MFM Queens found themselves on the back foot in a matter of minutes.

The Angolan side established a double digit lead at the end of the first quarter 25-12 much to the despair of their opponents. The latter reacted by playing better defense and limited InterClube to just two points in the second half of the second quarter.

Turning Point: When InterClube head coach Apolinario Paquete decided to take off his starting five and introduce his fringe players, MFM Queens sensed the change and put up a spirited fight.

It worked for them on defense but they failed to score on the other end of the court as InterClube also limited them to just 21 points in the second and third quarter combined.

InterClube started the fourth quarter on a high note and the rest is history. The Nigerian outfit dropped their shoulders and the Angolans punished their attitude thereafter winning the game 79-43.

Stats Don't Lie: InterClube picked an impressive 51 rebounds with each of the players recording at least one as compared to MFM Queens who only managed 37 off the boards.

The Angolan side registered 21 steals and scored 25 points off fast breaks while their bench came up big scoring 41 of their 79 points. This solid performance explains InterClube's victory.

Game Hero: Even though point guard Italee Lucas played for just 21 minutes, her contribution of 15 points and two rebounds stood out. Center Angelina Golome with 10 points and six rebounds was immense in the paint.

Quote: "This year, I do not have to score 30 points. Robyn Parks and Astou Traore are very great inside and outside game. Hopefully, we can turn things around this year," Lucas, InterClube point guard.

"We knew that this game was going to be tough and we came out to play strong but InterClube was much stronger than us," Ifunanya Okoro, MFM Queens shooting guard.

Bottom Line: It is an open secret that InterClube are title favorites to win their sixth record championship and the signs are there for everyone to see. The way they carry themselves reflects a team that means serious business and that is willing to pay the price.
