City Oilers, Power remain unbeaten at FIBA Africa Zone 5 Club Championship

KAMPALA (FIBA Africa Champions Cup 2017) - Ugandan representatives City Oilers and Betway Power remain unbeaten at the ongoing FIBA Africa Zone 5 Club Championships in Uganda ahead of the Quarter-Finals that tip off on Thursday.

Adarius Pegues put in a man-of-the-match performance with a double double netting 19 points and picking 10 rebounds on a night that many a basketball enthusiast had long-awaited since the tournament got underway on Sunday.

The scoreline was tied at 23-up at the end of the first quarter with Patriots forward Olivier Shyaka leading the statistics board with nine points while Oilers shooting guard Robinson Opong had scored eight.

In front of a fully packed stadium, both sides showcased the birth of a new rivalry in the East African region and to many a fan, this is a welcome opportunity to divide opinions.

Mandy Juruni's outfit led 45-42 at the half time break but this was far from over with Patriots center Kami Kabange at the core of a paint battle against Pegues.

In the third quarter, the Patriots established an eight point lead 53-45, the biggest in the second half but the Oilers came back stronger to lead 61-60.

With the backing of the home crowd, the Oilers delivered to go top of Group A while the Patriots settled for second place.

In the other big game of the day, Betway Power saw off a strong challenge from Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) to win 73-60 to go top of Group B.

Power captain Joseph Ikong said, "It is a great opportunity for the boys because this gives them confidence as we go on in the tournament."

"Ugandan basketball is growing and it is only right that the teams representing the country put up a good show not only for the fans but to send a message out there that as a country, we are doing some work."

Tanzanian side Savio picked their first win at the tournament with a 76-42 victory over Hawassa City to finish third in Group A as the latter remained winless at the tournament so far.

ABC of Tanzania made light work of Ethiopian outfit Gondar City 131-44 to also record their first victory to finish third in Group B while debutants Gondar City settled for fourth position.

The winner of this tournament will represent Zone 5 at the FIBA Africa Champions Cup 2017 that will be hosted in Tunisia in December.
