Advantage InterClube after seeing off Ferroviario de Maputo

GABORONE (FIBA Africa Champions Cup 2017) - Angolan side InterClube made light work of their Mozambican rivals Ferroviario de Maputo 101-76 to remain unbeaten at the ongoing FIBA Africa Zone 6 Qualifiers on Sunday in the Botswana capital Gaborone.

The unstoppable Henry Uhegwu Okechukwu sunk a game high 21 points and picked six rebounds to inspire his side to their third straight win at the regional competition.

Joao Jungo and Jose Salvador Vemba added 20 and 19 points in a rather high scoring game that was close from the onset when the first quarter ended 22-21 in favour of InterClube.

Things went haywire in the second quarter onwards when InterClube’s defense reflected well on the offensive side of the court.

A 52-39 lead at the half time break set the pace for the eventual result as Nasir Sale’s side failed to stop them in both transition and in the paint.

“This is a very big win for us because they were our top challengers at this tournament. Our coach got us prepared and we have a young team. We executed our game plan and won,” Okechukwu said.

Meanwhile, another Angolan outfit Libolo made it three wins out of three following their convincing 120-27 win over Troopers of Botswana.

The one-sided encounter was a true reflection of the division between the two sides and a quick reminder on why Angola dominates the Zone 6 region courtesy of decades of experience at the world stage.

Paul Tatenda put up a man-of-the-match performance recording a double double dropping 27 points and picking 11 rebounds to guide Harare City Hornets past Botswana’s Dolphins 75-53 to stay on course with their objective at the tournament.

Both Libolo and InterClube remain unbeaten after three games while Ferroviario de Maputo cannot afford to slip up going forward.
