Three teams, two slots on offer for the 2022 FIBA Africa Champions Cup for Women

YAOUNDE (Cameroon) - Three teams from two countries are set to battle it out for the two spots on offer for FIBA Africa Zone 4 for a place in the 2022 FIBA Africa Champions Cup for Women in Maputo, Mozambique later this year.

The three-team showdown will take place from October 12-14 at Yaounde Palais Polyvalent Des Sports in Cameroon.

The number of teams was reduced to three following the withdrawal of ASB Makomeno of the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Participating teams are OverDose Up Station Club and Universite Douala, both from Cameroon and CNSS of DR Congo.

OverDose reach the regional qualifier as Cameroon champions while Universite Douala earned their ticket as runners-up in the local league.

Meanwhile, Kinshasa-based CNSS are the DR Congo reigning champions.

In Wednesday's opening game slated for 14:00 (local time), CNSS, who reached the Quarter-Finals of the 2018 and 2019 editions of the FIBA Africa Champions Cup for Women, will face off against Universite de Douala.

CNSS Coach Ade Koko admitted that he knows little about the Cameroon teams as both teams are making their debut in the African women basketball showpiece.

Koko told FIBA.basketball that he is confident of his side picking one of the two slots on offer. "We are in Yaounde to give our best and as being of the top women club side in Africa we will count on our experience to get the job done."

Coach of Universite de Douala, Ivan Ngoug Manang believes playing as team will be their strength, though he admitted that the qualifiers will be a tough on the back of losing the national title to Overdose Up Station and the fact that CNSS are veterans when it comes to Africa women club Championship. He said: "We are not scared with the pedigree of our opponents as we will count on teamwork to outsmart our opponents. We are out to prove a point first to our local rival Overdose Up Station that the qualifiers is different from the local league."

Overdose Up Station guard - Mbiydzenyuy Eileen and team head coach Roger Dassi Acha were united in their chat with FIBA.basketball that they are sure of picking one of the two slots on offer.

Coach Acha, who will be parading a crop young players, says making it to Maputo, for the final round will be a dream come through the coaching crew, players and management of the Yaounde-based Cameroon champion.

Speaking in the same Eileen sounded a note of warning to other two teams contending with her side to be on the lookout to what they are capable of doing.

"We are not afraid to play at biggest stage of Africa women club Championship, it is some we have long to achieve though no thanks to COVID pandemic which did not allow FIBA to stage the championship for two years but now that the is here we will not let go," she concluded.
