Senegal out to stop Malian dominance

CAIRO (Egypt) - Former African champions Senegal have returned to the FIBA U18 Women's African Championship for the first time since 2012 and will be looking to stop arch rivals Mali.

That the two sides face off in Senegal's first game at the 2020 edition on Friday at the Cairo Stadium presents an opportunity for them to declare their title ambitions as they look to win for the first time since the inaugural edition in 1985 in Accra.

While at it, Senegal who are the most successful team in Africa at the senior level having won a record 12 titles at the FIBA Women's AfroBasket, are looking to also use this competition to build a strong base for the Lionesses.

Speaking to FIBA.basketball, Senegal's Technical Director Moustapha Gaye said that, "It is important for the young girls to compete at this level so that we make sure we are building from the grassroots. We have so many talented players and to give them a chance here in Egypt is worthwhile."

Meanwhile, Mali who got off to a winning start against hosts Egypt 64-36 on Thursday will be looking to register their second straight victory.

Mali head coach Amadou Bamba admitted that, "Games against Mali and Senegal are always tough because we are big rivals and we know each other very well. We are ready for them and for the challenge. It will be a good game of basketball."

Back to the drawing board, they have since built a winning machine that has since seen them win three straight titles in 2014, 2016 and 2018.

Mali are the undisputed princesses of the FIBA U18 Women's African Championship but whether they can keep their crown with Senegal at this year's edition is a question that only time can tell.

The game will be live on the FIBA YouTube channel at 1800hrs GMT.
