Uganda aim Semi-Finals at FIBA U16 Africa Women's Africa Championship 2021

KAMPALA (Uganda) - Uganda are set to open a residential camp with 15 players as they finalise preparations for next month's  FIBA U16 Africa Women's Championship in Egypt.

The players, according to Coach Nicholas Natuherezathe, Technical Director of Uganda Basketball Association (FUBA),  were picked from an earlier camp of 25 players.

The residential camp is meant to ensure that the players are at full concentration and to ensure that they are within the COVID-19 protocols following the latest lockdown in Uganda.

The East African country will be making their second appearance in the championship, having finished fifth in their debut in Kagali, Rwanda back in 2019.

As with every team heading into competition, Uganda are setting a new target of reaching the Semi-Final stage this time around.

"IN ANY CHAMPIONSHIP, WHETHER SENIOR OR JUNIOR, OUR GOAL IS ALWAYS TO COMPETE AND FINISH AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL."- FUBA President Nasser Sserunjogi

Natuhereza recalls the performance of the girls in 2019 and told FIBA.basketball that: "Our girls did well that time and we're hoping to at least be in the Semi-Finals. There are a few teams and the usual power houses aren't taking part, so we have a shot."

Indeed, head coach for the women's team Roger Sserunyigo has a tall task before him as he would be looking forward to making the mark set by the federation.

As for the President of the Federation of Uganda Basketball Associations Sserunjogi making the best of the situation is key and he says: "In any championship, whether senior or junior, our goal is always to compete and finish at the highest level."
