Rwanda eye final at FIBA U16 Women's African Championship

KIGALI (Rwanda) - Playing at home inculcates massive pressure to perform to the highest level and for Rwanda, the expectations are the same when they host the upcoming FIBA U16 Women's African Championship in Kigali from July 28 to August 4.

For the East African country, this is an opportunity to stay true to the notion that is grassroots development as an example to many on the continent that investing in the youth is the only way to dominate at the top in the future and it starts with early exposure.

After the Zone 5 Qualifiers last month, Charles Mushumba's side have their work cut out and they know that they must step up to the occasion and make a statement to their fans who will be present in big numbers at the Kigali Indoor Arena.

"WHEN YOU GO TO A COMPETITION LIKE THIS, YOU WANT TO PLAY TO THE BEST OF YOUR ABILITIES AND IT IS POSSIBLE TO GO ALL THE WAY TO THE FINAL IF YOU PLAY WELL."- Mushumba

For Rwanda, qualifying for the FIBA U17 Basketball Women's World Cup 2020 is a long short but doing the very best within their means is what is on top of their priority list.

Mushumba told FIBA.basketball that, "We made so many careless mistakes in Zone 5 because it was the first time ever that we played an international tournament so the players were so scared in the beginning but as the tournament progressed, they grew into the action."

However, playing in front of their fans is something that excites Mushumba because he believes this motivates the players and can be ground for eventual victory.

"We have been preparing for this competition and have played some friendly games to help us correct our mistakes and get ready for the continental showpiece."

"When you go to a competition like this, you want to play to the best of your abilities and it is possible to go all the way to the final if you play well," Mushumba stated.

Angola, Egypt, reigning champions Mali, Mozambique, hosts Rwanda, South Africa, Tanzania and Uganda complete the lineup of eight teams that will be battling for continental glory.
